Me Barker-teatterin, Turun vapaan taiteen näyttämön taiteilijat ja ystävät vetoamme Turun kaupungin kulttuurilautakuntaan ja pyydämme teitä ottamaan Barkerin vuokratuen uudelleen käsittelyyn.

Barker-teatteri on merkittävä alueellinen toimija niin pitkän historiansa kuin alueellisen, kansallisen ja kansainvälisesti tunnistetun toimintansa ja vaikuttavuutensa ansiosta. Barkerin kuratoima ohjelmisto on ja on aina ollut rohkeaa, rajoja rikkovaa ja ammatillisesti korkeatasoista taidetta. Barker-teatteri on Turun alueen ensimmäinen tanssin vapaan kentän näyttämö ja ensimmäinen teatteri, joka tarjosi mahdollisuuksia taiteilijoiden residenssityöskentelyyn. Barker on Turussa ainoa tanssin vapaalle kentälle suunnattu, muunneltavissa oleva näyttämötila, joka soveltuu liikkuville ja laajaa pinta-alaa vaativille teoksille, niin lattia- kuin ilmatilassa. Tilassa ei ole lainkaan pilareita ja tällaisena se on Turussa ainutlaatuinen. Teatteri on avannut ovensa tanssitaiteen ohella myös muulle näyttämötaiteelle. Barker-teatteri on esimerkiksi ensimmäisenä teatterina Turussa ollut tukemassa sirkuksen vapaan kentän toimintaa. Kotimaisen ja paikallisen taiteen lisäksi Barker-teatteri tuo aktiivisesti Turkuun kansainvälistä osaamista. Mikäli Barker-teatteri selviää siihen kohdistetuista leikkauksista se juhlii ensi vuonna (2027) 30-vuotisjuhlavuottaan.

Korona-pandemian jälkeen kaikki taidetoimijat ovat kärsineet yleisökadosta. Jälleenrakennus on pitkä ja työläs, eikä sitä helpota kiristynyt taloustilanne eivätkä kulttuuriin kohdistetut leikkaukset. Barker-teatteri on toiminut taiteilijoiden tukena tässä haastavassa tilanteessa tarjoten edullisen (usein ilmaisen) vaihtoehdon työskentelylle, tapahtumien järjestämiselle ja esitystoiminnalle. Nyt, kun leikkauksia kohdistetaan sekä taiteen tekijöiden apurahoihin että taideinstituutioihin samanaikaisesti, rakentamamme ekosysteemi hajoaa. Esityksiä ja tapahtumia joudutaan perumaan. Barker-teatteri joutui vuonna 2022 siirtymään alkuperäisestä sijainnistaan huomattavasti kalliimpaan kaupungin kiinteistöön. Jo tällöin oli selvää, että vuokran kolminkertaistuminen on suuri isku teatterin toiminnalle. Leikkaamalla Barker-teatterilta päättäjät ajavat teatterin mahdottomaan tilaan, jossa sillä ei ole muita vaihtoehtoja kuin nostaa hintojaan ja ajaa taloudellisesti heikoimmassa asemassa olevat taiteilijat ohjelmistojen ulkopuolelle.

Turun kaupunki on mediassa kertonut tukevansa taiteilijoilta vuokratuen avulla, mutta samaan aikaan leikannut Barker-teatterilta vuokratuen kokonaisuudessaan. Barker- teatterin toiminta on turvattava tanssitaiteen monimuotoisuuden säilyttämiseksi Turussa.

We, the artists and friends of the Barker Theatre - the free arts stage of Turku, appeal to the Cultural Committee of the City of Turku and ask you to reconsider Barker's rental subsidy. Barker Theatre is a significant regional actor, both due to its long history and its regional, national and internationally recognized activities and impact. The program curated by Barker is and has always been bold, boundary-breaking and professionally high-level art. Barker Theatre is the first free dance stage in the Turku region and the first theater that offered opportunities for artists to work in residence. Barker is the only flexible stage space in Turku aimed at the free dance, which is suitable for mobile and large-scale works, both on the floor and in the air. The space has no pillars at all and as such is unique in Turku. In addition to dance, the theatre has also opened its doors to other performing arts. For example, Barker Theatre was the first theatre in Turku to support the free circus arena. In addition to domestic and local art, Barker Theatre actively brings international expertise to Turku. If Barker Theatre survives the cuts it has been facing, it will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year (2027).

After the Corona pandemic, all theatres have suffered from a loss of audience. Rebuilding is a long journey, and it is not made easier by the tightened economic situation regarding the cuts targeted at culture. Barker Theatre has acted as a support for artists true it’s existence. Now, when cuts are targeted at both artists' grants and arts institutions, the ecosystem we have built is falling apart. Barker Theatre had to move from the location of the device to a more expensive city property in 2022. It was known the tripling of the rent is a major blow to the theatre operations. By cutting resources from the Barker Theatre, decision-makers are driving the theatre into an impossible situation, where it has no other options but to raise its prices and drive the economically weakest artists out of their programs.

We, hope that the City of Turku will reconsider the rental subsidy for Barker Theatre. We base our request on the municipal obligations defined by the Municipal Act (in particular the Act on Cultural Activities of Municipalities). These include the municipality's obligation to maintain the conditions for the development of local and regional vitality and the creative activities that support it through culture and art. Unlike, for example, the Turku City Theatre, the Western Dance Regional Centre and the VOS Dance Theatres that more robustly supported performing arts organisations, the Barker Theatre carries out this task by offering artists from the free field in the area opportunity to realise new ideas and performances, even in a short time frame. Barker Theatre provides artists with a rehearsal and performance space, technical expertise and production and collegial support. Barker Theatre enables a kind of courage in thinking and action that more rigidly functioning organizations do not have the opportunity to do, and is therefore a very important part of the ecosystem of the Turku art scene. Often, the most interesting artistic openings arise on the margins, which move the entire field of performing arts forward.

The City of Turku has stated in the media that it supports artists through rental subsidies, but at the same time has cut the rental subsidies from Barker Theatre entirely. Barker Theatre's operations must be secured in order to preserve the diversity of dance art in Turku.
