US President Barak Obama sent his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres a letter Tuesday congratulating Israel on its Independence Day, which will be celebrated Thursday.

Obama expressed his country’s dedication to Israel on its 64th birthday and reaffirmed the US’s commitment to Israel’s security and to comprehensive peace.

The text in full:

Dear Mr. President:

On the 64th anniversary of lsrael’s independence on April 26, I wish to
extend warmest regards and congratulations on behalf of the American people.

Based on shared values and interests, the bonds between our two countries are deep and strong. In a time of momentous change, the United States remains steadfast in its commitment to Israel’s security and a comprehensive peace in the region.

As we work together to pursue common goals and meet shared challenges, I wish the State of Israel continued prosperity and a peaceful future.

Erez Efrati, serving eight year sentence, says he can’t pay damages, even if victim deserves them

Erez Efrati, former bodyguard to IDF Chief of Staff, was convicted to 8 years in prison on Tuesday.

 

Bodyguard to the former head of the IDF expressed regret over the assault of a young woman at the Tel Aviv port in 2009, in a move that surprised both the court and his lawyers.



In November 2009 Erez Efrati was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape of a young woman after a bachelor party at the Tel Aviv port.

At first Efrati claimed he had never encountered the woman, then later changed his story saying that he attacked her because he thought she was a terrorist.



The Tel Aviv Regional Court accepted a plea bargain with Efrati, who was a guard to former IDF chief Gabi Ashkenazi, in the high profile case, keeping the bodyguard from a rape charge. He was sentenced in 2010 to eight years in jail.

Tuesday marked the first time Efrati apologized for his action in public, during a hearing in a civil damages suit filed against him by the victim.

“I’m guilty and I’m responsible for the damage caused to the victim and her family,” he told the court.

“There is no need for experts to confirm (my culpability)…the testimonies of the victim and my memory of the event are enough,” he said.



According to the indictment, on the night in November 2009 Efrati dragged the woman to an area outside of her car, where he stuffed her mouth and threatened to kill her if she screamed. When the plaintiff continued to scream for help, he hit her on the head until she partially lost consciousness.



The court rejected Efrati’s initial claim that he thought the victim was a terrorist, as well as his appeal of the sentence.

The plaintiff who is suing for NIS 3 million in damages, attended the trial on Tuesday.

“Since this happened, I feel that I’m not the same person I once was. I don’t want to say anything to Efrati or to ask anything from the court,” she said in tears.

Efrati said that even if he wanted to pay her the demanded sum he could not afford it, or even a fraction of it.

“In the past I was a guard and didn’t save millions and never had any assets,” he said. “Even the NIS 150,000 I paid as part of the criminal proceedings wiped out all my savings and also included loans from relatives that I barely managed to scrape together from the friends I still had.”

Nainen oli siis arabi, koska IDF:n armeijan päällikön henkivartija valehteli luulleensa häntä terroristiksi.

Arabinaisen kimppuun saa siis käydä, ja hänet saa raiskata, kunhan vain "luulee", että nainen on terroristi???

Vaikuttaa pahasti siltä, että Israelin armeijan ylipäällikkö ei muistanut kertoa henkivartijoilleen, että armeija noudattaa aina korkeaa moraalista standardia, ja että se koskee myös korkeimman tason henkivartijoita.

Turkki ei päästä Israelia NATO:n huippukokoukseen


Turkki ei toimita Israelille kutsua toukokuussa Chicagossa pidettävään NATO:n huippukokoukseen.

Syynä tähän on Turkin mukaan Israelin kieltäytyminen esittämästä anteeksipyyntöä yhdeksän turkkilaisen aktivistin kuolemasta vuonna 2010 Israelin erikoisjoukkojen hyökätessä Gazaan humanitaarista apua kuljettanutta laivaa vastaan.

Me emme anna omaa suostumustamme, sanoi turkkilainen virkamies uutistoimisto Reutersille vastatessaan kysymykseen, aikooko Turkki estää Israelin pääsyn NATO:n huippukokoukseen Chicagoon toukokuun 20. ja 21. päivinä.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israel closed checkpoints in the West Bank late Tuesday for 48 hours while the country commemorates national holidays, the army said.

All entry and exit crossings from the West Bank will be closed until Thursday at midnight, with the exception of prior-authorized medical emergencies, a press statement said.

Israel marks Memorial Day on Wednesday, and Independence Day on Thursday.

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Tuesday detained fishermen working off the coast of the Gaza Strip.

Local official Mahfouth al-Kabareeti told Ma'an that Israeli naval forces detained Nader Yousef Abu Simaan, 22, and his brother Hasan at sea and confiscated their equipment. The brothers, from al-Shati refugee camp, were fishing within the area designated by Israel, he added.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said forces detained fishermen from Gaza because they deviated from the designated fishing area.

They were transferred to the custody of security forces, she said. She could not immediately specify how many fishermen were detained.

Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed on a 20-nautical-mile fishing zone off Gaza's coast under the Oslo Accords, but Israel unilaterally imposes a 3-mile limit. Israeli warships frequently open fire at boats that allegedly stray from the permitted area.

Fishermen say the limits have destroyed their livelihood and that it is impossible to trawl a large catch within the designated area.

Israel has controlled Gaza waters since its occupation of the area in 1967, and has kept several warships stationed off the coast since 2008.

HEBRON (Ma'an) -- An Israeli commander threatened to shut down a primary school south of Hebron, the headteacher said on Monday.

The officer phoned the principal of Zif school, north of Yatta, to warn him forces would shut down the school if one rock is thrown at an Israeli car in the area.

He said students were hurling stones at the cars of Israelis living in nearby settlements.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said she was not familiar with any order against the school.

SALFIT (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities bulldozed around 500 olives trees near Salfit on Friday afternoon, locals told Ma'an.

Israeli authorities claimed the al-Daher area is state land, but Salfit residents Ahmad Theeb Alkam and Samir Al-Masri say they own the land.

Samir Al-Masri, who is also an engineer and director of the Cooperative Association for Agricultural Development in Salfit, said officials accompanied by soldiers uprooted over 300 olive trees on his land, razing ten dunams.

Ahmad Theeb Alkam, 87, said bulldozers leveled ten dunams of land, and uprooted 200 olive saplings, as well as rock walls built by his family.

Alkam said he inherited the land from his parents and has documents to prove it, stressing that he will not be moved from his land.
