European Citizens' Address Calls for Criminalization of NSA Surveillance in Europe

KAUNIAINEN, FINLAND, March 27, 2014 /SPNW Newswire/  In the wake of the shocking and at times
embarrassing exposure of mass surveillance by the United States National Security Agency (NSA)
in Europe and elsewhere, a new EU Citizen Referendum has been started. The online address which
calls for criminalization of activities such as those exposed by Edward Snowden was started in
Finland this week and received its first citizen signature within thirty seconds of being posted
online.

The text which is in Finnish and English calls for the creation of "a Directive to Criminalize
Foreign Surveillance and Espionage Activities within the European Union". According to the
address such activities include those mass surveillance activities allegedly being carried out
by the United Kingdom.

The legislation called for would subject those in charge of espionage activities to jail time
ranging from 6 months to ten years and would allow for the posting of international INTERPOL
warrants and 5 year to permanent entry and immigration bans for such individuals. EU companies
working with foreign agencies or allowing their surveillance could be subjected to an EU-wide
ban on their activities, including being permanently barred form handling the sensitive data
of citizens.
