Ancient Greek and Latin are in trouble in French schools too and I just want to support all the countries who go through the same difficulties !
Good luck !

Knowledge and understanding of the Classical World has so much to teach the modern world. Loss of contact with it would be disastrous.

I've had many fruitful dealings with Finnish academia over the years, visiting Helsinki several times. This decision is a seriously retrograde step which will only harm the international standing of classical studies, and the humanities more generally, in Finland.

The field in question is important to our understanding of where we came from.

If we lose the opportunity to train future scholars in the knowledge of our material past, we will slowly lose bits and pieces of our common humanity, our shared identity. We need that now more than ever. Please do not let Classical Archaeology die in Finland.

It is important to resist the forces of barbarism which are driven by financial projections that are themselves based solely on money, which is itself the product of human imagination and has no real-world existence.

I AM A DOCTORAL STUDENT OF HUMANITIES AND I FEAR THAT THERE WILL BE A GREAT LOSS, NOT ONLY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, BUT IN THE CAPACITY TO DEVELOP HUMANITIES, THOUGHT AND RESEARCH IN FINLAND, IF CLASSICAL CULTURES CANNOT BE STUDIED AND LEARNED FROM.

A good friend and colleague has benefited greatly from Classical Archaeology at Helsinki and it would be a shame if others could not have the same opportunities that he has had.

It is imperative that there be somewhere in Finland where one can study classical antiquity.

Latin and the Greek-Roman traditions are the roots of European identity. Please do not abolish these studies from the most important University of Finnland.

In my opinion it is incredibly shortsighted to remove anything involving 'culture' from a university curriculum. Anyone with any understanding of education in its broader sense will and must include the past as well as the present and possible future.

I'm signing because I am a friend of Finland!

For a research university to be considered an international-level institution, it must have a dedicated specialist in classical archeology. The University of Helsinki would be voluntarily downgrading its position in international university rankings by eliminating this lectureship.

(Philadelphia, PA, 13.05.2018)

Maintaining the University of Helsinki Classical Lectureship is critical for the future of humanities research, not just in Finland but also abroad. I have had the good fortune to meet several 'home grown' Finnish archaeologists at the Finnish Institute in Athens, and was deeply impressed by them and their work. Finnish scholars in the field may be few compared to other nationalities, but their work has a profound impact. The cessation of any teaching of Classical Archaeology at the University of Helsinki (the last any Finnish University to teach the subject) will deprive the global research community of valuable future talent, and Finland of their critical contribution to broader Humanities discussion and social insights.

(Sydney, 13.05.2018)

I'm signing because of the importance of Classical Archaeology in this global era. You have terrific young scholars who can interpret ancient culture for a new generation.

The Finnish School at Athens does very important work in Classical Archaeology and should be supported by the teaching of Classical Archaeology in Finland.

I'm signing because my comic book series tells the story of the Trojan War. I rely on classical sources for both the story and the archaeology of the story. Classical studies are vital to my vision and career.
