Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran combatants who have served in the Israeli military since the start of the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories.

We endeavor to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis, and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life.

Soldiers who serve in the Territories witness and participate in military actions which change them immensely.

Cases of abuse towards Palestinians, looting, and destruction of property have been the norm for years, but are still explained as extreme and unique cases.

Our testimonies portray a different, and much grimmer picture in which deterioration of moral standards finds expression in the character of orders and the rules of engagement, and are justified in the name of Israel's security.

While this reality is known to Israeli soldiers and commanders, Israeli society continues to turn a blind eye, and to deny that what is done in its name.

Discharged soldiers returning to civilian life discover the gap between the reality they encountered in the Territories, and the silence about this reality they encounter at home.

In order to become civilians again, soldiers are forced to ignore what they have seen and done.

We strive to make heard the voices of these soldiers, pushing Israeli society to face the reality whose creation it has enabled.

Näyttää taas olevan saman asian virheellistä kertausta, kuten koko tämän adressin olemassaolon ajan.  Ensinnäkin alueella on aina, KAIKKINA AIKOINA asunut juutalaisia enemmän ja vähemmän.   3500 vuoden juutalainen historia alueella on jo aikamoinen, sanoisin "OIKEUTUS" heidän siellä oloonsa. Diasporan jälkeen, Turkkilaisten ottomaanien hallinta-aikana hallitsija Suleiman Suuri(astui valtaan 1517) suhtautui suopeasti juutalaisiin ja hän salli heidän muuttaa alueelle runsaslukuisesti. He saivat perustaa kaupunkeja ja harjoittaa uskonnollisia menojaan. Heitä muutti Euroopasta lisää juutalaisiin asutuskeskuksiin joissa heitä oli ollut jo vuosituhansien ajan, kuten esimerkiksi Tiberiaaseen, Hebroniin, Jerusalemiin, Jaffaan sekä Safediin. Pelkästään Safedin kaupungissa asui 1500-luvun lopulla jo yli 10 000 juutalaista.  Vuonna 1563 painettiin Safedissa muuten koko Aasian ensimmäinen sanomalehti. Ottomaanien aikakausi kesti alueella n. 400 vuotta. Tuona aikana asui alueella runsaasti juutalaisia ja he saivat olla melko rauhassa. Useissa kaupungeissa jopa enemmistö oli juutalaisia. Esimerkiksi Jerusalemissa, vaikka usein muuta väitetään. Ottomaanien aikakaudella alettiin kirjaamaan kaupunkien asukasmääriä 1800-luvun alun jälkeen. Jerusalemin tarkat asukasluvut löytyvät 1844 alkaen. Silloin ja aina sen jälkeenkin, laskennassa juutalaisia on ollut selvästi eniten. Jonain laskentavuonna jopa lähes kolminkertainen määrä arabeihin verrattuna.  Kyseisellä alueella EI OLE KOSKAAN OLLUT PALESTIINA NIMISTÄ VALTIOTA, sensijaan juutalainen valtio monen sadan vuoden ajan. Palestiinalaisvaltio Transjordania(nykyinen Jordania) perustettiin Englannin mandaattialueelle YK:n jakoehdotuksen mukaan, Juutalaisvaltio ei toteutunutkaan suunnitelman mukaan. Kun Israel julistautui itsenäiseksi valtioksi, oli se maa-alueeltaan huomattavasti suunniteltua pienempi.  Ympäröivät arabimaat yrittivät lisäksi yhteistuumin tuhota raukkamaisesti piskuruisen "rimpulavaltion" heti alkuunsa. Toisin kuitenkin kävi. Yhdysvallat ei taatusti ollut tuolloin Israelin valtion apuna, kuten nykyään väitetään olevan. Tapahtui siis valtava IHME. "Rimpulavaltio" jäi henkiin ja on edelleenkin, vaikka arabivaltiot ovat toistaneet hyökkäyksensä useita kertoja Israelin historian aikana.

Edellämainitun perusteella Israelilla on taatusti oikeus pieneen maa-alueeseensa nimeltä Israel, joka on kooltaa Uudenmaanläänin kokoinen. Nyt sitä yritetään vielä lohkoa ja reiittää vielä lisää. Jos olemme rehellisiä, ei arabien taustalla  tosiaankaan ole huoli palestiinan valtiosta. Palestiinalaisille olisi taatusti löytynyt maa-alueita esimerkiksi mandaattialueen isosta ns. palestiinalaisvaltiosta Transjordaniasta(nykyinen Jordania) tai  miksi he eivät ns. palestiinalaisina halunneet kyseisessä valtiossa asua. Liekö syynä Jasser Arafatin ja PLO:n yritys tappaa(useita kertoja) Jordanian kuningas ja kaapata valta. Tämän seurauksena porukka sai maasta ns. "kenkää".   Taustalla ovat aivan muut asiat. Islam ja viha juutalaisia kohtaan kauttaaltaan. Jos haluaa asiaa laajentaa, miksi juutalaisia on vainottu ja yritetty tuhota vuosituhansien aikana lukuisia kertoja. Tuskinpa yksikään muu kansa on joutunut historiansa aikana kokemaan niin totaalista vainoa ja hävitystä. Edellenkin tuo kansa on olemassa ja vieläpä taas omassa maassaan 2000 vuoden hajaannuksen  jälkeen, IHMEELLISTÄ.

Jos vähänkin uskallat ajatella asiaa hengelliseltä kantilta, voit ymmärtää asian ytimen. Jumala, joka ilmestyi tuon kansan elämään ja myöhemmin heidän keskelleen Jeesuksen muodossa,valmistaen pelastuksen mahdollisuuden meille kaikille sovituskuolemansa kautta. Antaessaan kaikki lupaukset, sanansa sekä tekemällä kaikki liitot tuon kansan kanssa, nimittäen suuressa rakkaudessaan tuota kansaa silmäteräkseen. Tuo kansa rikkoi kaikki Jumalansa kanssa tekemät liitot, hylkäsi Jumalansa niinkuin mekin. Siksi he ovat saaneet kokea "ohdakkeisen tien"ja heitä on kansana viety" kölin ali", niinkuin ei mitään muuta kansaa. Toisekseen maailmassa vaikuttava toinen voima, paholainen, vihaa tuota kansaa ja Jumalan lupauksia sitä kohtaan, se on istuttanut vihansa ja käyttänyt/käyttää omiaan Jumalaa ja Jumalan tahtoa vastaan sekä Israelia vastaan, ettei Jumalan lupaukset toteutuisi.

Tiedätkö,  Jumala on kuitenkin sanassaan raamatussa luvannut, että hän pitää omalta puoleltaan kaikki lupaukset ja liitot tuon kansan kanssa, siksi tuo kansa on edelleen olemassa, vaikka sitä on yritetty tuhota. Pojassaan Jeesuksessa (Jeshuassa) Jumala itse valmisti sovituksen ja pelastuksen juutalaisille sekä myös meille. Vastaanottamalla henkilökohtaisesti messiaansa ja hänen sovitustyönsä Jumala loi juutalaisille kuin myös meille tien uudelleen yhteyteensä.   Raamattu sanoo, että kerran KAIKKI juutalaiset ottavat messiaansa vastaan ja he pääsevät taas Jumalansa yhteyteen ja silloin toteutuvat ne kaikki ihanat lupaukset, joita Jumala on heille antanut. Heillä tulee olemaan hieno tulevaisuus, se aika ei todellakaan ole kaukana.  Siksi minä en ainakaan halua asettua esteeksi, kun Jumala toteuttaa suunnitelmiaan tuon kansan suhteen, vaan siunaan sitä kuten raamattu kehoittaa. Tuo kansa ja valtio alkaa tosiaan olla se"väkikivi", johon moni valtio vielä itsensä repii, kuten raamattu ilmoittaa. Toivottavasti ei oma rakas Suomemme.

Tuo oli todella viisaasti ja asiayhteyteen soveltuen sanottu! Israel-Palestiina-konfliktissa on Jumalan oikeus ja vanhurskaus ollut kovasti kadoksissa - kumpikaan osapuoli ei halajaisi etsiä Jumalan sydäntä ja mieltä.

Sitäkin ilahduttavampaa on ollut todeta, että juutalaispuolella on alkanut olla tinkimätöntä vastuunottoa IDF:n väärinkäytösten suhteen. On ollut monia IDF-veteraaneja, jotka ovat olleet valmiita tunnustamaan, että ne teot, joita he ovat joko itse tehneet, tai nähneet toisten tekevän, eivät ole olleet oikein.

Ometz LeSarev (Hebrew: אומץ לסרב‎, Courage to Refuse) is an organization of reserve officers and soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) who refuse to serve beyond the 1967 borders, but "shall continue serving in the Israel Defense Forces in any mission that serves Israel's defense." These conscientious objectors refer to themselves as refuseniks a reference to the refusenik Jews of Soviet Russia.

The movement began as a nucleus of 51 reserve officers and soldiers, who in January 2002 published an ad in the Israeli daily Haaretz, which would later come to be known as "The Combatants' Letter". Three years later the number of signatories had reached well over 600.

Courage to Refuse - Combatant's Letter

We, reserve combat officers and soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces, who were raised upon the principles of Zionism, sacrifice and giving to the people of Israel and to the State of Israel, who have always served in the front lines, and who were the first to carry out any mission, light or heavy, in order to protect the State of Israel and strengthen it.

We, combat officers and soldiers who have served the State of Israel for long weeks every year, in spite of the dear cost to our personal lives, have been on reserve duty all over the Occupied Territories, and were issued commands and directives that had nothing to do with the security of our country, and that had the sole purpose of perpetuating our control over the Palestinian people.

We, whose eyes have seen the bloody toll this Occupation exacts from both sides.

We, who sensed how the commands issued to us in the Territories, destroy all the values we had absorbed while growing up in this country.

We, who understand now that the price of Occupation is the loss of IDF’s human character and the corruption of the entire Israeli society.

We, who know that the Territories are not Israel, and that all settlements are bound to be evacuated in the end.

We hereby declare that we shall not continue to fight this War of the Settlements.

We shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders in order to dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people.

We hereby declare that we shall continue serving in the Israel Defense Forces in any mission that serves Israel’s defense.

The missions of occupation and oppression do not serve this purpose – and we shall take no part in them.

Yesh Gvul (Hebrew: יש גבול, can be translated as "there is a limit", as "the border exists", or as "enough is enough"

is a movement founded in 1982, by combat veterans, at the outbreak of the Lebanon War, who refused to serve in Lebanon and has expanded its opposition to the war in Lebanon to the negation of service in the occupied territories, reflected in the current Yesh Gvul slogan:

“We don’t shoot, we don’t cry, and we don’t serve in the occupied territories !”[2

Refusal to serve in the Israeli military

"The pilots' letter," published on September 24, 2003, was signed by 27 reserve and active duty pilots.[8] One of the signatories was the famous pilot Brigadier General (res.) Yiftah Spector.

The letter was precipitated by the targeted killing of Salah Shehade, leader of Hamas's militant wing, who was killed by a one ton bomb dropped on his residential building along with 14 others.

Pilots decried the large number of civilian casualties caused by Israel's targeted killings as violating the military's ethics code.

In their letter, the pilots stated:

We, veteran and active pilots alike, who served and still serve the state of Israel for long weeks every year, are opposed to carrying out attack orders that are illegal and immoral of the type the state of Israel has been conducting in the territories.

We, who were raised to love the state of Israel and contribute to the Zionist enterprise, refuse to take part in Air Force attacks on civilian population centers.

We, for whom the Israel Defense Forces and the Air Force are an inalienable part of ourselves, refuse to continue to harm innocent civilians.

These actions are illegal and immoral, and are a direct result of the ongoing occupation which is corrupting all of Israeli society.

Perpetuation of the occupation is fatally harming the security of the state of Israel and its moral strength.

The signatories clarified that they do not reject military service in the IDF, only targeted killings of individuals

Refusal to serve in the Israeli military

This letter, dated December 2003, was signed by 13 reservists of Sayeret Matkal, an elite commando unit, serving in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (nine commandos in Sayeret Matkal, 2 soldiers who had been removed from reserve duty because of prior refusals to serve there, and 2 additional combatant soldiers).

Their letter, addressed to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, stated:

We shall no longer lend a hand in the occupation of the territories.

We shall no longer take part in the deprivation of basic human rights from millions of Palestinians.

We shall no longer serve as a shield in the crusade of the settlements.

We shall no longer corrupt our moral character in missions of oppression.

We shall no longer deny our responsibility as soldiers of the Israeli DEFENSE force.

For the first time, suicide has become the leading cause of death in the Israeli armed forces, according to an Israeli newspaper report.

Quoting statistics from Israeli army's rehabilitation division, the Hebrew daily Maariv said that in 2003, the number of Israeli soldiers who committed suicide was significantly higher than those killed during military incursions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

A total of 43 Israeli soldiers took their own lives last year compared to 30 soldiers killed in intifada-related hostilities, said the report.

This represents a 30% increase in the number of suicides over the 2002 figure of 31.

Additionally, in 2003, 32 Israeli soldiers died of various illnesses, 27 were killed in traffic accidents or during vacation and 10 died in traffic accidents while on duty.

Nine soldiers were killed during training and practice exercises and in course of military operations. A further eight soldiers died due to other reasons.

This year's suicide figure is just as disturbing. The newspaper said 15 Israeli soldiers have killed themselves in the first six months of 2004.


Soldiers psychologically scarred

The publication of the Maariv report appears to have taken the Israeli military by surprise. An army spokesman said the fatality figures may have been leaked by unauthorised sources within the army or the Ministry of Defence.

The Israeli army denies as a matter of course any connection between army "excesses" in the occupied territories and the phenomenon of suicides among soldiers.

Army sources routinely cite more mundane reasons such as emotional crises, bullying and percecution by superiors, and psychological depression.

However, it is widely believed that a significant number of the suicide cases are connected to soldiers' traumatic experiences in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

'Terrible burden'

An Israeli peace activist,  said she believed many of the soldiers who went on to take their own lives, simply couldn't live with the moral burden of causing avoidable and unjustified deaths in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"They are ordered to do things that go against their moral values and when they do — because, after all, a good soldier is one who obeys orders, not one who thinks — they are left with this terrible burden which evolves into depression and eventually leads to suicide."

In another incident, which took place earlier this week, an army reserve soldier joined the small but growing list of so-called refuseniks opposed to the continued Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In a letter to his local recruitment officer explaining his reasons for disobeying orders to join his unit in the West Bank, Chaim Feldman accused the Israeli army of committing manifestly criminal acts against innocent Palestinians.

"My letter to you is short and concise. I have no intention of wearing the uniform of this organisation known as the Israeli Defence Forces which fires artillery shells on civilian crowds, including children and old people.

I see no reason why I should join this organisation."

The "conscientious objector" described the IDF as an organisation that defends "fascist settlers breaking the law and uprooting and burning olive trees".

Feldman is likely to be tried and imprisoned for disobeying orders and desertion.
